"It is with profound grief that we write to tell you that Anna Maria will cease academic operations at the end of our Spring 2026 semester." Such was the announcement from the college's president, Sean Ryan, and the school's board of trustees, posted to the school's X handle on April 23, 2026, announcing that the school would close. At the time of this publication, the school's .edu website was inaccessible.
The school had 832 full-time undergraduates as of the last published data from the U.S. Department of Education, although such data has not been updated in 2025 or 2026. The school has 14 intercollegiate sports, including eSports.
The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education recently flagged the school as being at risk of closure, saying that it notified the school that it cannot confirm that Anna Maria "has sufficient resources to be able to sustain operations at current levels."
The AMCATs, literally an acronym meaning Anna Maria College Athletic Team, were 7-3 last season in football, 7-2 in MASCAC play. It was their first season in the conference.
