This project went from our brains, the D3football.com archive of content, and Keith McMillan's old Notes files in his phone into reality.
With that in mind, your take on the top 10 could differ from ours, and we accept that. Some games that we were at, some we marveled at as we covered them, couldn't crack our Top 10. Here's a quick look:
2011: Mount Union 28, Wesley 21. Wesley did lead this game twice in the first half before Mount Union scored on its first two drives of the third quarter to take a 28-14 lead. Shane McSweeny hit Matt Barile for an 81-yard TD pass with 13:30 left in the game to make it 28-21, but Wesley had three more possessios and never got closer than the Mount Union 34. 2013: UW-Whitewater 16, Mary Hardin-Baylor 15. This is the game where UMHB decided to throw the ball to a backup tight end on third down on the goal line, down by four points. When he dropped that pass in the end zone, the Cru elected to kick the field goal with 3:29 remaining in the game. UMHB didn't get the ball back until there was just one second remaining. 2014: UW-Whitewater 20, Linfield 14. This was Lance Leipold's last home game as UW-Whitewater coach. Imagine a coach taking a new job, and everyone knowing about it, yet finishing out the playoffs with his old team. The Warhawks' Dennis Moore scores the game-winning touchdown with 5:00 left in the game, and the defense gets a sack on Linfield quarterback Sam Riddle on fourth-and-3 in the red zone to seal the deal. 2016: Mary Hardin-Baylor 14, Mount Union 12. A great game but we also didn't feel like piling on on Mount Union and including three Purple Raider losses in our Top 10. This one ended Mount Union's run of consecutive Stagg Bowl appearances, and it's the one where Baylor Mullins comes on in punt formation at the Mount Union 32 but throws a pass for a first down to seal the game. 2019: UW-Whitewater 35, St. John's 32. UW-Whitewater finished an 11-play, five and a half minute fourth-quarter drive with a season-long 37-yard field goal by Wojciech Gasienica into a 15 mph win, then intercepted Jackson Erdmann on the first play in the two-minute drill, and the Warhawks secured their first trip to the Stagg Bowl in the post-Lance Leipold era.
