Game Preview: Blazers Looking for Bounce Back Week in Home Opener

More news about: Belhaven

JACKSON - The Belhaven Football team returns home to Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Saturday night for a early-season matchup against Trinity (TX). Kickoff for the home opener is set for 6:00 PM.

The two teams enter in similar situations after both dropped their season openers a weekend ago after reaching the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 2023. The then-No. 13 Tigers were upset by Texas Lutheran, 35-20, in San Antonio, despite allowing just 43 yards on the ground.

Offensively, Trinity is led by first-year starter Ryan Back who went 17-for-39 for 179 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the opening week. Running backs Winston Hutchison and Legend Grigsby led the ground game with 67 and 45 yards, respectively. Eight different receivers recorded a catch in the opener.

On the defensive side of the ball, TJ Scannell (11) and James Ogunrin (10) finished with double-digit tackles to lead the Tigers, while Tyson Cornett earned SAA Defensive Player of the Week honors after recorded seven tackles, 0.5 tackle for loss, a fumble recovery, and an interception against TLU.

Saturday's contest marks the first time that the two teams have met on the gridiron.
