OBERLIN, Oh. – Year two of the Calvin University football program opened with an emphatic 88-6 road win at Oberlin College Saturday afternoon. The Knights rolled up more than 650 yards of total offense while limiting the Yeoman to just 171 yards of offense including a negative 56 yards on the ground.
Calvin led 24-0 after one quarter of play and 40-0 at halftime as it cruised to victory.
Sophomore quarterback Thomas Vaccaro had a strong debut for Calvin. The Samford University transfer completed 17 of 26 passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns. All three scoring strikes went to the hands of sophomore Luke Michmerhuizen who scored on scoring strikes of 13 yards, 24 yards and six yards. Michmerhuizen's first touchdown gave Calvin a 6-0 lead and the Knights capitalized on a trick two-point conversion play to sophomore Carter Bylsma. The Bylsma conversion run gave Calvin an 8-0 lead. Michmerhuizen finished with seven receptions for 107 yards. Seven different Calvin receivers recorded at least one reception in the win.
Sophomore Hunter Hogan made a big impact on offense. Starting in his first collegiate game at running back, Hogan rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. His day was highlighted by a broken-field 65-yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the third quarter. Hogan also had four receptions and returned one kickoff for 32 yards.
Sophomore Nick Earles ran for a career-high 81 yards on 11 carries while scoring three touchdowns. Sophomore Kaleb Dubowski had 64 yards on the ground including a 48-yard touchdown run. Freshman speedster Hudson Shoup added a 34-yard touchdown run in his collegiate debut while returning a kickoff for 34 yards.
Junior Alexander Minnehan returned the first punt for a touchdown in program history, racing through several would-be tacklers for a 59-yard score in the third quarter.
On defense, sophomore Caiden Bolduc had a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The interception was the first "pick six" in Calvin football history.
Freshman Leighton Kolk had nine carries for 51 yards in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Alex VanSweden added 45 yards on four carries. Sophomore Drake Irwin came on at quarterback in the second half, completing 2 of 5 passes for 37 yards.
Sophomore Carson Schnurstein had a big game on defense with 14 tackles (9 solo/5 assist) including three sacks. Bolduc had two sacks with sophomore Breylon Cox contributing one sack.
Sophomores Kai Hanog and Isiah Hill teamed up for one sack.
Sophomore Sal Ruffino booted a pair of field goals, one from 35 and another from 25. Sophomore Logan Knapp had one punt, booming it for 49 yards. He was also 6-for-6 on point-after tries.
Oberlin senior quarterback Drew Nye was 21-of-48 passing for 227 yards and one touchdown. His lone scoring strike was a 17-yard touchdown throw to J.J. Racz.
